This entire thread has inspired me to re-read several manpages, which has also led to me finding the command line option that solves my problem with one of the more annoying features of less (the fact that, by default, you actually have to press "q" to hit less, instead of being returned to the command line when you're finished viewing something. This drove me nuts when I was just trying to get a directory listing, and was probably why I used more instead in the first place). I'm not sure why this annoyed me, but it did. Probably because I didn't know about less when I first discovered UNIX and my own behavior is remarkably similar to one of pavlov's dogs. 'ls --color=yes | less -Er' takes me back to the good old days. Ahhhhh. I guess the moral of this story is: "you can learn stuff by reading the documentation."
