May be you somehow lost the user specific kwmrc
(~/.kde/share/config/kwmrc) so it is falling back on the compiled in
default which could be 2.  (I get 4 virtual desktops by default,
though). Anyway,  look for the kwmrc and the line NumberOfDesktops=n.
You can change it back to 4. You can configure it also from
K->Panel->Configure.
