The mail (actually mailx) source I have here gets the user mailbox as

if (!(mbox = getenv("MAIL")))
		(void)sprintf(buf, "%s/%s", _PATH_MAILDIR, user);	

and /usr/include/paths.h defines _PATH_MAILDIR as /var/spool/mail.
This is paths.h labelled @(#)paths.h     5.15 (Berkeley) 5/29/91.
