Probably the best/safest/most useful way of upgrading to new packages while insuring that you're not BREAKING anything is to download the .src.rpm from rawhide or wherever and then doing an 'rpm --rebuild (filename)'. This will generate new binary RPMs on your system that you know compiled correctly with your current libraries and such.
