I've never had any problems with IBM drives.  Not the fastest drives on the
planet, but I've never had one die on me[1].

[1] 'Cause I've never owned a PowerBook.  Back in mid-'96, IBM supplied a
    bunch of drives to Apple ... they used a lubricant that turned into glue
    after a certain amount of use -- I'm still not convinced that this was
    not intentional ...
