AbiWord is a difficult build but it's pretty okay when you get it
up and running. It uses a library to read the MS docs which is being
separately developed. I can't recall the name of the library, but I
guess since it is there, there must be more readers out there... Speaking
of Abi I must download the latest version one of these days...

"antiword" sounds interesting also although I haven't used it...
