Nevermind, I finally was successful in recompling kernel and pcmcia-cs, but unfortunately cardctl ident has still no product info available. I loaded pcnet_cs by hand, it is unused. Frank's card was identified by cardctl ident, so I guess it is useless to comment anything out in the /etc/pcmcia/config. So I guess I will have to bring the card back.
