Thanks Koji,

The time and date link looks like a great resource for the wierd
countries. After reading Stephens mail also, I've a good idea how
to manage them on the linux side. Here is a short overview.

Mostly linux handles it automatically, if your machine is set to
the correct tz. All the information and rules the machine needs 
to handle zones and DST correctly is found under a zoneinfo directory,
usually /usr/local/etc/zoneinfo but RH sticks it under /usr/share/zoneinfo.

A useful command is to dump any zones DSTs behaviour with the
zdump command. The output for Europe/Dublin is for 2001 is...

Europe/Dublin  Sun Mar 25 00:59:59 2001 UTC = Sun Mar 25 00:59:59 2001 GMT isdst=0 gmtoff=0
Europe/Dublin  Sun Mar 25 01:00:00 2001 UTC = Sun Mar 25 02:00:00 2001 IST isdst=1 gmtoff=3600
Europe/Dublin  Sun Oct 28 00:59:59 2001 UTC = Sun Oct 28 01:59:59 2001 IST isdst=1 gmtoff=3600
Europe/Dublin  Sun Oct 28 01:00:00 2001 UTC = Sun Oct 28 01:00:00 2001 GMT isdst=0 gmtoff=0

If anything were to change, ie I read that France likes to change the
rules every year, you can always change the Ruleset, that the zoneinfo
directory was compiled from. This is done by using the zic command
and altering the zone source file. I couldn't find the master file on
my RH6.1 machine but I guess you can download a new updated one from
somewhere every year so you don't have to change any rules at all???
Anyone confirm this or the location?

Sorry all hope it was a little bit interesting. I've lived in Japan for
most of my unix life and so have not had to think about DST before,
but I was just curious yesterday and had to find out :)
