text drawing tool

Hi

I need a tool for writing some specs in text format.  I need to be able
to easily draw lines, circles, boxes, tables etc in the document. What I
have at the moment is vi, so any tool better than this for drawing these
shapes would be fantastic, any suggestions anyone.
