if it's only getting hot in Linux and not in Windows, I'd say it's a problem with Linux not talking to the power management controller correctly. I believe the new laptop boxen have several power states they can be in to reduce heat and power usage, which your current Linux kernel may not be aware of. Try installing a 2.4 kernel, or if you want the "easy route", install Redhat 7.1 since it comes with a 2.4 kernel out of the box (other distros may also do this - I haven't researched it. If you're a linux beginner, though, Redhat is very user-friendly, especially during the install[1][2]) [1] Steve - I know, I know. but it has a nice GUI that easily lets people install XEmacs.. You need to find the cause. The problem might be that your laptop is not cooled/ventillated properly and the processor overheats. Try running cpu hungry applications on the text console (without starting X), compiling kernels in an endless loop is a good test for this. If it can go on for a week without freezing then the problem might be with your video card driver in XFree, or something else. -- B0Ti. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Next Nomikai Meeting: Fri, June 15 19:30- Tengu Tokyo Eki-Mae Next Technical Meeting: Sat, July 14 13:30- ----------------------------------------------------------------------- more info: http://www.tlug.gr.jp Sponsor: Global Online Japan
