Connecting to the Internet proper, you are unlikely to see *effective* speeds approaching a plain olde Ethernet. Remember that the throughput of an Internet connection is the minimum throughput of all the segments your connection passes through. I have an uncapped cable service, and it's a good day that I get as much as 1Mbps effective. The only really high speed I can get is to the ISP's own ftp area. The moment my connection gets out into the real Internet world, congestion and delay rules, as it always has.
