RedHat and several other distributions are setup with support for iptables and ipchains as modules for the kernel. Once inserted, userspace programs are used to set up the firlewall rules (chains). The two modules are incompatible with each other and cannot be installed simultaniously. It's either one or the other. In the 2.4 series kernels, ipchains support is included for backwards compatability while iptables is the "supported" method for setting up filrewalls. -- Marc C. http://www.mecworks.com
