Check http://www.tlug.jp/m17n/ and read KDE/RedHat pages.  That should 
not be too much.

KDE (or Qt) has a known problem with its inputstyle.  Try

#kate -inputstyle overthespot

and it worked with Japanese, then it is the overthespot problem.  You 
can modifiy the default inputstyle by running qtconfig, but some 
versions of qtconfig lack the function.

Why run cannaserver and Wnn?  They are almost identical in functionality.

Abiword is a GTK application, so it might be another problem.  Maybe a 
font problem?
