Backslash, on the other hand, is special and if present (and not escaped by another backslash) makes the following character special too. So, `&' will match `&', and `\&' will match nothing because it is not a valid special sequence. Hope I put it right. Please also see "Syntax of Regular Expressions" section of emacs manual. Viktor
