[tlug] Display variable settings (No GUI)

I'm running RH7.2 and have had trouble installing RPM's.  Now I've seem to
have lost the GUI
I get the following messages at boot up

[root@example.com root]# rpm -u --replacepkgs/home/Lesley/rp8
linux20_libc6_i386_Cs2_rpm;echo RESULT=$?ps
Failed to open your Xdisplay.  Please try setting your DISPLAY environment
variable and try again.
result=0ps

From what I can gather it seems like RPM is trying to replace packages but
is unsuccessful.
How can I set the display setting variable??
