The reader arrived just two days after I've ordered it, and I've spent
the better part of this morning trying to get it to work, but with no
luck. Despite having looked at the Linux USB Guide as well as several
HOWTOs written by people who got USB devices working on their boxen.
I've compiled the following into the kernel:

USB support
usbdevfs support
UHCI alternate diver support (I have a VIA chipset, this should be right)
USB mass storage support
Michrotech and Sandisk support (clutching at straws)
SCSI disk support
SCSI generic support
MSDOS FAT and VFAT support
MSDOS partition tables support (probably not necessary)

The device is definitely getting recognized: /proc/bus/usb/devices has,
among other things, the following lines:

T: Bus=01 Lev=01 Prnt=01 Port=00 Cnt=01 Dev#= 3 Spd=12 MxCh= 0
D: Ver= 1.10 Cls=00(>ifc ) Sub=00 Prot=00 MxPS= 8 #Cfgs= 1
P: Vendor=057b ProdID=0020 Rev= 1.01
S: Manufacturer=Y-E DATA
S: Product=Silicon Media R/W
S: SerialNumber=000000007AF9
C:* #Ifs= 1 Cfg#= 1 Atr=80 MxPwr=500mA
I: If#= 0 Alt= 0 #EPs= 2 Cls=08(stor.) Sub=06 Prot=50 Driver=usb-storage
E: Ad=81(I) Atr=02(Bulk) MxPS= 64 Ivl=0ms
E: Ad=02(O) Atr=02(Bulk) MxPS= 64 Ivl=0ms

And /proc/scsi/usb-storage-0/1 has:

   Host scsi1: usb-storage
       Vendor: Y-E DATA
      Product: Silicon Media R/W
Serial Number: 000000007AF9
     Protocol: Transparent SCSI
    Transport: Bulk
         GUID: 057b00200000000000007af9
     Attached: Yes

But the kernel messages are foreboding: here's some of what I get from
dmesg:

scsi1 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices

/dev/sda has automagically showed up, but fdisk is unable to open it,
and "mount -t vfat /dev/sda /mnt/other" gives me "mount: No medium found".
But I do definitely have media in there: SmartMedia cards with pictures
that my Fuji digital camera can see.

Is there some driver or module that I've forgotten to compile in? What
kernel options and such have those of you who got the reader working used?
Thanks in advance for your help; and my apologies if I've posted way more
information than necessary.
