As a French one, Spanish looks more similar than Italian to my native language (this is totally subjective!). Googlelling a little gave me this link which looks interesting (follow the link at the bottom of the page to have more information) and states also that Italian is closest to French (I am always wrong!). http://www.micheloud.com/FXM/LA/LE/relfdif.htm The bottom link: http://www.micheloud.com/FXM/LA/LA/index.htm br. PS. But of course, the guy is totally wrong when he says that Italian is "Probably the most beautiful spoken language" ;-) PPS. And I think also that the initial question (Spanish branched from Latin earlier than Italian) is not incompatible with the following mails, including mine. Being "quite different" (sic) still could make one language to be one of the nearest to another one. Spanish is obviously not very far from French and Italian. English or German are very different from these three. French has some Celtic roots for instance (and others), but the main are Latin. -- GPG Key: 653514E5 (http://www.raoult.com/gpg) -- Unix is user friendly.
