ISO2022 (JIS) is an alternative to euc/sjis/utf. JIS is modal, it uses a character sequence which flags the start of Japanese, then another character sequence to leave Japanese encoding, whereas EUC and SJIS use special code ranges. JIS is most often used for exchanging messages and is almost universally understood.
