Let me add to the confusion: I get the same sort of weird behaviour for the Arial Unicode TTF in applications ranging from Scribus to Sylpheed (http://www2.gol.com/users/plate/arialunicode_sylpheed.png), but not in Pan. And I'm running neither RedHat nor Debian, this is a Gentoo installation (Xfree 4.2.99). The whole KOffice range and KMail etc. use this font without any complaints, but not all Qt-based applications are immune, Nethack-Qt has the doublespaced TTF, too. I'm not sure, but I think it already happened way back when I upgraded Xfree to 4.2.1. Needless to say that I'm completely without clues how to fix this...
