Would that this were the solution. I patched the file and rebuilt
gtkhtml, but I still get little open boxes instead of the proper
characters. I don't need to rebuild evolution, do I? (ldd shows it
pointing to the newly build libgtkhtml.)

What font and encoding are you using? I tried a large number of them,
and didn't have any success.

(This doesn't have anything to do with the fact that I'm running
evolution remotely and displaying it on my machine at home which does
not have the patched gtkhtml, does it?)
