I bought a Zaurus SL-A300 and downloaded Kanji Nirvana for it.  You can
search for kanji by inputting  the radicals you see, the strokes you think
you count, or make an attempt to draw it and it will try to recognise it.  I
used use it on the train because you spend a lot of time looking at posters
in Japanese.
