I'm basically in the same camp. I like using an e-mail reader that's got all the same tools, same interface, etc., as the other applications I'm doing my work in. But instead of VM, I use MEW, mostly because when I started out in Emacs/Linux and my head was spinning trying to learn so much new stuff all at once, the user support on MEW list was (and still is) the best I've ever seen for a single application.
