I think version 1 of gjiten used LANGUAGE instead of LC_CTYPE. Also, The Gimp will only use Japanese fonts if LC_ALL is set to ja_JP, as far as I can remember. Of course, Gimp also crashes if you try to make logos with large Japanese fonts. Anyway, if this isn't a serious issue, I'll modify the howto to include LC_CTYPE.
