I think especially with the advent of broadband, people have been enabled to be online all day, something that in turn paved the way for very active Linux support channels on IRC. For instance, if I need immediate help with Linux, I can now visit the Norwegian AND English-speaking #linuxhelp channels on EFNet (and if I really want a good debate there's always the #gentoo channel on FreeNode), and on top of that I'm signed up with two e-mail lists that deal exclusively with Japanese input methods. As a discussion forum, though, I think nothing can quite match mailing lists, because it's not real-time like IRC, but it's still a mainstream medium. And the fact that you have meetings as well makes it a great forum for discussion. -David
