Depending how you coded it, the problem could have been caused by a
deprecation message. On my system:
bash-2.05b$ echo test | head -1
head: `-1' option is obsolete; use `-n 1' since this will be removed in the
future
test
bash-2.05b$ head --version
head (coreutils) 5.2.0
