Sometimes using dvdbackup -f helps[1]

I use wine + DVDShrink. It works pretty well. Here are my notes:

     ** Howto make a DVD-R from a DVD **


1) Use dvdbackup command to archive the DVD files to the hard disk:

# dvdbackup -i /dev/dvd -F -o /share/dvd/StarWars/

2) Use DVDShrink to shrink the DVD files to under 4.7Gb

# cd /home/jmorgan/Wine
# /usr/bin/wine DVD\ Shrink\ 3.0\ Beta\ 5.exe

** Note for DVDShrink
  a) Open Files (eg /share/dvd/StarWars/ )
  b) Select main feature --> right Click --> Choose Copy
  c) Click on NewAuthor from tool bar
  d) Right Click on new DVD --> Choose Paste
  e) Click on Backup from tool bar --> Choose location \
    (eg /share/dvd/StarWars_Episode2/ )
  f) Wait while it encodes and backups to location
  g) Close DVDShrink


3) Create ISO

# mkisofs -dvd-video -v -o starwars.iso StarWars_Episode2/

4) Burn ISO to disk

# dvdrecord -v -dao -eject speed=4 dev=0,0,0 starwars.iso


This also helped fixed any region problems I had with DVDs I bought in
Japan. The original DVD wouldn't play on my DVDPlayer connected to my TV.
A few days after I got the above working, I figured out how to make my
DVDPlayer region free :)

[1] -f is backup just the main feature iirc.
