Still no joy, wish8.4 doesn't like the arguments to encoding ... ah,
'system' doesn't exist because I run in the POSIX locale?  Try it with
LANG set ... bingo!

Wow, that's annoying.  Even better than xroach ... I'll have to try it
on somebody I don't like using the -display option!

For true confusion, request COMPOUND_TEXT.  That's not a bug, that's a
feature.... ;-)
