- Subject: [tlug] LinuxWorld (boring)
This year's LinuxWorld seemed exceptionally dull, perhaps related to an extremely high suit-to-jeans ratio. And before lunch exhibitors outnumbered visitors at nearly all the booths. How many resellers of the same commodity anti-virus and "network security" products do we need? Novell had a huge booth, but didn't seem to need most of it. One interesting booth was also very low key. Sun had a counter of laptops setup running their Java Desktop System that you could play with. (Is there anything compelling about this? It seemed to be just Gnome and StarOffice.) More interesting, one was running a prototype of the very pretty Looking Glass "3D" desktop. Being able to "flip" applications over and take notes on the "back" of them is cute... but probably not very convenient if you need to keep flipping it over to make references. But it looks great, complete with transparency that changes with focus and windows that "hang" from the edges. <http://wwws.sun.com/software/looking_glass/> It looks like there is some interesting work going on with the Japanese language version of Knoppix, including integration with UserModeLinux. <http://unit.aist.go.jp/it/knoppix/> -- Jim Tittsler http://www.OnJapan.net/ GPG: 0x01159DB6 Python Starship http://Starship.Python.net/ Ringo MUG Tokyo http://www.ringo.net/rss.html
