I see you solved your printer problem. This is a dependency bug, as libc provides the libraries defined by the C standard, and therefore any "generic" C program (ie, just about anything except the kernel) is going to depend on glibc. This is something that every single binary distro gets wrong. (If Gentoo provides binary packages, I still don't consider it a binary distro.)
