Not sure if this is of any help, but in trying Thunderbird and Mozilla, I've found Mozilla to have the functionality of with-frills e-mail without the irritation of overautomation that I ran into with Thunderbird. Totally unscientific reply, but I did spend some time using both on the same machine, and Thunderbird was a bit (consistently) irritating, while Mozilla worked/works much more to my liking - pretty much as Netscape 4.7 did.....
