Let me clarify Josh's statement.  You were NOT an annoying newbie.
Steve is one of our most knowledegable list members, and the fact that
he answered shows that you are NOT being annoying.

Don't be ashamed of making errors.  I think that Josh and several other
programmers would be very glad to have more kernel programming questions
on this list.   

I hope there is no misunderstanding.  No one was saying your question is
too simple for this list.  They meant that although there are many
skilled programmers on this list, that you might get better answers on a
list for programmers.

However, such questions about the kernel and programming are DEFINITELY
very welcome on this list.

on this list. (I'm not a programmer, so it's a little over my head, but
it's still interesting for non-programmers like myself to read.)  Please
