It is appropriate to send email in HTML when the recipient welcomes it. So it is entirely appropriate for your father to send you an HTML Christmas card. Of course, even if you did not want to receive HTML email, out of politeness, you would not complain to your father. You would wait for your father to ask (in summer!) about how the various internet scams that he sees in the news work and what he can do to avoid them. Then you would find him a nice plain text email program to protect him. You would _never_, _ever_ breath a negative word about the Christmas card. If my father sent me such an email, he would ask about it and I would tell him what I saw. When we figured out why I did not see what he intended, I would ask that he show it to me on his computer the next time I saw him. And then I would come right over.
