Re: [tlug] How to Push Linux! .......................

Josh - Okay. I take you point that I shouldn't say what I think about
Microsoft, but I have four complaints about your e-mail:

1) Re: "Please note that I also grant Steve carte blanche to criticize
me for....."

You give Steve carte blanche to criticize anybody & anything at anytime.
Okay - fine. He's a big man, I'm a stupid bozo. I'll leave the
criticizing to him and censor any criticism I have about anyone at any
time beyond the very mildest of polite hints. Steve can toss in the
explosive cannonballs, I'll throw back feathers.

2) Re: "Back in this thread, that also means that it is OK for me to
criticize you for FUDding back at Microsoft."

Bloody acronyms! "FUD" means "Fear, Uncertainly & Doubt". You're
misusing the term here. Why not just say "going overboard in criticizing
Microsoft"?

3) Re: "However, from these two data points, concluding that Microsoft
is an "illegal company" full of assholes who cannot write good code is
just as idiotic as Microsoft supporters claiming that Microsoft beats
Linux in terms of TCO."

I never said that! I have never used that terminology and never have I
spoken of whether they can write code or not! Once more, for the record,
I have criticized Microsoft for the way they conduct business. That is
the core issue. I take it you're not concerned with the huge number of
frivolous patents they are relentlessly taking out.... It's true that I
don't like their software, but that's a matter of its functionality and
overautomation - never have I suggested that they are incapable of
skillful work.

4) Yes, I remember. But you misquoted him. What he actually said is this:

>>"There is a danger in the fact that many of the people who are
>>passionate about Linux, are really passionate about their opposition to
>>the status quo... because the question arises - when the status quo
>>changes, what will bind us together."

Oh for God's sake Josh! Stop misquoting people! There's no excuse for it
since you have access to both the audio file and a previously published
(on this list) exact transcript of what was said. I DID NOT SAY
"Microsoft must be defeated at any cost"!!! Please, stop misquoting Mark
and me! Here is that part of the discussion:

Mark Shuttleworth: "Perhaps I could ask a question of you as somebody
who watches the industry - how would you characterize free software in
Japan today"

LHS: "Well, I'm not an expert actually - I mean, I use Linux on the
desktop myself, and I'm very interested in promoting Linux and that sort
of thing, but I'm actually not specifically focused on technology. I've
been doing a lot of more general kind of issues about Japan... and about
travel to the Boso Peninsula and that sort of thing. So I'm actually not
an expert at all, but I'm a user of Linux and I want to do anything I
can to promote it, so I'm sort of a crusading anti-Microsoft person - I
really hate Microsoft."

[Japanese translation]

LHS: "And... and also...."

Mark Shuttleworth: "There is a danger in the fact that many of the
people who are passionate about Linux, are really passionate about their
opposition to the status quo... because the question arises - when the
status quo changes, what will bind us together."

LHS: "Haha - Yeah, okay..."

Mark Shuttleworth: "And, ah... And ah... So I think my focus is very
much on promotion of what is good about this software."

Okay. Sorry for expressing my opinions on this list, I'll go back to
lurking. Steve - the stage is yours. Have fun.

Lyle
