It keeps a better database of what you have installed and why, making it easier to back out dependency installed stuff. And aptitude makes it much easier to install something that drags in a lot of dependencies. You can mix methods, but if you stick with aptidude [sic] (with or without the synaptic gui) it will keep track of everything nicely. But of course the apt-cache search/show are nice, and faster.
