I've been using a new host co. for just a few months but I'm happy enough so far to recomend them: check out hub.org I chose them because they offer chrooted freeBSD servers allowing you to have root control of your own 'virtual server' install whatever software you want, start and stop services on your own. I'd say they're pretty much the no-frills option. You start out with a very minimal server setup: your preferred version of Apache or other webserver, perl, your choice of PHP etc. Then from there you can install software yourself or request just about anything that can run on FreeBSD. It's not for everyone, but it's been perfect for me since I wanted as much control as possible without paying for colocation. Despite being allowed to manage it entirely on my own the owners have a pretty good online support system and seem willing to do just about anything you need. > I have seen a lot of ads about www.1and1.com, because they're cheap. Don't know anything about 1and1 but judging from their website, they're not the kind of service I'd even consider for a second. As for Japan, hosting companies seem way overpriced. A low-priliges account on a shared host costs about 10,000/month*. You could get a cheap dedicated machine for that price from some overseas hosts. * that's what my office is paying to GLobal Commons in Japan for a site with 256MB storage. -- ~Joshua
