Well, for one thing, I'm usually on a FreeBSD machine, so it would be 
/etc/rc.d/sshd  :)

I think a lot of it are the habits we form when we are learning.  As the
saying goes, in Unix there's always more than one way to do something,
with the corollary that someone is sure to think your way is stupid.
