To make one's points better. 

Including the footnote information where it is cited can disrupt 
the train of thought. Putting the footnote information at the 
bottom allows one to make one's points better. 

Also, putting the footnote information at the bottom, 
also allows one to elaborate more on side issues 
that would otherwise be too distracting where cited.
