Why, Jim, I didn't know your other box ran Windows! ;-) Seriously, what Scott is suggesting is an everyday occurrance. It's called "updating a package." He's just proposing updating to a previous version. I do this occasionally for precisely the same reasons as Dave would: some other package I have and can't/don't want to upgrade/rebuild is not compatible with the latest and greatest. The hairest part is that there's a strong bias toward "latest and breakest", so that package managers get confused if you try to go backwards. So use the dry-run option to determine the level of confusion. >> It might be a mess if other packages depend on the new version, >> but it is worth a try. Jim> Back up first. Just do a dry-run. (The relevant apt-get option is the marvellously unintuitive "-s".) If apt complains that you need to reinstall packages that aren't obviously derivative of the main one, *don't do it for real*. If you've you've got some aptitude for this, you can actually add those, do another dry-run, and see if apt continues to drag in more packages. If it stops without downgrading libc, you're probably OK. :-) More realistically, if there are only a couple of extraneous packages you need to worry about, post the output from apt here and get advice about whether you're likely to affect other important packages. Jim> Seriously, emulation or UML is a cleaner saner way.
