Re: [tlug] Printer Not Responding

TLUG,

Theoretically Ubuntu Dapper Drake 6.06 LTS is now out of beta and in official release. I was waiting on this milestone before continuing to wrestle with my printer, so that I would be more or less sure that the problems didn't stem from some bug that was created during development.

I haven't touched CUPS or anything for a over a month now. Although, I have been able to print using Windows XP from within Vmware Player.

Things do seem to be different. There were a couple times when the Ubuntu update manager automatically downloaded some updates for CUPS and it asked me if it could over write the configuration files. Since nothing was working anyway, I just said yes to every update.

Today I decided to see what the current conditions are. I went to the CUPS interface in FireFox, and it said "printer not found". Hmm... So then I went to the "Administration" tab. It said, "No Printers". And then I realized the power on my printer was off. Doh.

So I turned it on, waited a few seconds, and reloaded the page. It said:
New Printers Found:
* Add This Printer Canon iP_3100 (Canon iP_3100 USB #1)
* Add This Printer Canon iP_3100 (USB Printer #1 with status readback for Canon BJ)

Okay... I'm a little confused as to why two showed up, when there's only one.

But it seemed promising, and I figured I'd try installing one of them. I chose the top one by clicking the "Add This Printer" button beside the name.

On the next page, one selects the Model/Driver from a list. The right drivers are listed there: Canon PIXUS iP3100 Ver.2.50 (en).

I select the driver, and then the "Add Printer" button, and...

I get a prompt to enter a username and password. Damn. Seemed so promising that the CUPS interface found my printer when I turned it on.

This is similar to some problems I was having earlier. I've kept this whole thread on my home computer, so I looked back on what was said before. It was suggested then that I needed to edit my cupsd.conf file to say:
<Location />
Order Allow,Deny
Allow from All
Deny from None
</Location>

Sadly, it didn't work then, and didn't work now.

So this is where I am. Despite the fact that I'm hitting a similar wall as before, it seems more promising that CUPS is responsive to the printer coming on line.

Any ideas on what I need to do to make it so that CUPS doesn't need a username and password, or to at lease give me the right access?
