'dpkg --purge' removes the package and its configuration files.

I would suggest trying to figure out what is broken first.

Are you sure MySQL is running?  (Did you forget to restart it after  
the config changes?  Does restarting help?  Does the mysql command  
line tool still work?)  Does the socket exist where you think it  
should?  Are the permissions correct?
