Re: [tlug] Modprobe error

Josh,
I would recommend that you tell Ubuntu to ask you about all upgrades,
and simply discard them unless they meet criteria (1) or (2), above.
Which will be Not Very Often, and will result in you having a stable
box that Just Works when you want to watch TV.

You make a good case, and I will incorporate a lot of what you say into my approach.

A main caveat is included in the part where you talk about upgrading to get a "nifty new feature" that I'm "dying to use".

The thing is that right now I don't see my box as being really complete. My printer and palm pilot still don't work. And after banging my head against trying to make them work for so long (I have two long and incomplete threads about them in the TLUG archives), it became clear that the problems were unspecific and beyond people's ability to help. I haven't even started on my web-cam (since it works with Vmware/Windows anyway). And there have been some wonky things that seem to have cleared up over time with successive upgrades. Things like my SD card reader, ALSA mixer, and so on.

So I have been tempted to keep upgrading by the fact that it has helped, and may yet still help, with issues that I don't have a clear enough diagnosis of to really focus on fixing myself.

Might it not be just as good an approach to keep upgrading, and boot to an earlier kernel when things don't work as expected?
