Shakthi, Thank you for responding.Sheepishly, I have to say that it's working now, for no reason that I can discern. I am sure that all of yesterday my Palm was not working, and there were no ttyUSB* files in the /dev directory. And then this morning, when I got up and tried your commands, it looked like there was a Palm device attached, and there were /dev/ttyUSB* files present.I'm baffled. Could a long wait have helped? dave@example.com:~$ ps -e | grep udev 2145 ? 00:00:00 udevd dave@example.com:~$ /bin/dmesg | tail [5051004.064000] ISO 9660 Extensions: Microsoft Joliet Level 3 [5051004.097000] ISO 9660 Extensions: RRIP_1991A[5087368.107000] usb 2-1.2: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 39[5087368.228000] usb 2-1.2: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice[5087368.232000] visor 2-1.2:1.0: Handspring Visor / Palm OS converter detected [5087368.232000] usb 2-1.2: Handspring Visor / Palm OS converter now attached to ttyUSB0 [5087368.232000] usb 2-1.2: Handspring Visor / Palm OS converter now attached to ttyUSB1[5108212.715000] Using specific hotkey driver [5108212.756000] ibm_acpi: ec object not found [5108212.814000] toshiba_acpi: Unknown parameter `hotkeys_over_acpi' dave@example.com:~$ ls /dev/ttyUSB* /dev/ttyUSB0 /dev/ttyUSB1 -- Dave M G Ubuntu 6.06 LTS Kernel 2.6.17.7 Pentium D Dual Core Processor PHP 5, MySQL 5, Apache 2
