This is a _very_ wild guess and probably _not_ the cause. 
Is your system dozing from inactivity then? 

I'm as surprised as you at the behavior. 
As who was the script running? root or peon? 
Could there be some higher level restriction on what 
peons can use during off-hours? Could this be a 
high-level crond configuration issue or an SELinux issue? 
Do other logs reveal anything untoward about crond/atd starting 
or stopping unexpectedly? 
These guesses just get wilder. 

Are you missing expected entries in cronlog, 
or do you have the expected entries in cronlog, 
but don't get the expected behavior from your script. 

What happens when you manually run the script early 
in the morning?

That's good. Some stuff is too dangerous to look at directly. :-)
