That's not the question. The question is, 'is it possible to successfully run any system with "+gnome" for more than a few minutes at a time?'
No. :)
By the way, is there a way to get portage to emerge something masked by a missing keyword and still maintain system sanity? "ebuild thepackage.ebuild" is apparently not recommended. :-(
Or do you have to stick it in OVERLAY_PORTDIR and go from there?
Use OVERLAY_PORTDIR, it is safer.
