Well, you have to use that hack to deal with IE's box model. In table-less layout, you use CSS positioning, but IE has to implement a non-standard box model just to piss off standards-loving web developers.
Tragically, as a web developer, you cannot ignore a web browser that still has at least 50% market share.
And while you are working around IE's CSS retardation already, you might as well use your pretty PNGs and just add on to the CSS hacks. :)
