The above would have left a prefs.js.BAK file, pre-modifications, in
each directory.

Yes, I idiotically forgot that Thunderbird is "just an MUA" (not
really, since it has a complete XML rendering engine at its core), so
the Mozilla prefs would not work straight up.

I am also not terribly surprised that Firefox did not like raw Mozilla
prefs. I thought it would complain loudly about each pref it did not
understand, but I guess not.

versions (i.e. before I had you run all of these commands) on:

and reply to this email with the URIs of each, I will have a look.
