The gadget might be fun, but when someone resorts to spam in order to inform people about it then I lose interest pretty damn quick. What would have been wrong with joining a mailing list or two and asking the moderators for permission (that would oundoubtedly have been granted) to mention the project on-list?
That takes lots of time.
Let's be reasonable here. Is it really spam when it is something you might be interested in? This company is offering to trade their product for our hacking services. I fail to see how that is off-topic, and in fact I specifically chose to forward this mail on to TLUG from another LUG list.
