Yeah after Scott's reply, I figured that out.  BOOTPROTO=dhcp

Neither way worked.

It's more than that though.

For example on a fc3 box I can:
set eth0 to dhcp or configure it manually and ifup eth0 works

yet for eth1 and the same ifcfg-eth0 file copied to ifcfg-eth1 it won't
work after doing 
$ifdown eth0
$ifup eth1



my fc6 box has a onboard lan that other lists say is unlikely to work

so I am trying to get the fc6 eth1 lan card working

[got confused on server vs. client requirments for eth0 and eth1]

tried disabling the fc6 on board eth0 and just configuring the pcicard
on eth0 but that hasn't worked.

so now I think I will go back to fc3 and try to get my eth1 lan card
working

I can configure eth0 on board in fc3 fine either with dhcp or
statically.

maybe I will do a fresh install of fc6 with the onboard nic disabled in
bios and try the pci card as eth0 again.

Sorry for any confusion.  Lots of it here though.
