It might shock an old timer but I would recommand a total beginner to
write scripts in Python instead of one of the shell dialect. In
addition to better "portability", you have a more "natural"
programming interface than what you would have with shell scripts.
And this newly acquired skill can be put to good use right away on
larger projects.
