TLUG,
Today I completed my switch from my previous Tepco Hikari plan to KDDI's Hikari One plan. Saves me 2000 yen a month compared to my previous plan, which is nice.
However, they came over today and changed my media converter. They also sent me a new router in the mail which they told me I need to use.
The new router does not use a username or password anywhere. Somehow either it knows, or they know, who I am and allow me access to the net.
All I have to do to get my Linux machine to talk to the router and get net access is to set it to use DHCP.
Which is all well and good in terms of its simplicity and clarity.
However, the thing is that my previous router, which was my own (as opposed to a rental from the ISP), had all my settings for port mapping which allowed things like Skype and P2P applications to run all nice and smooth.
Now, with the new router, everything is saying that it might be "blocked" or "firewalled".
This new router doesn't seem to give me any options to log into it (it's not there at 192.168.0.1, like most routers).
Does having this fully automatic router mean that I'm screwed out of having my own personal port settings and other advanced options?
This is the first time I've ever seen a router that didn't need a username/password setting, so I'm confused about it. Does it have it hard coded in there? Do they check my identity somewhere else?
Can anyone maybe break down for me how authentication of identity would work on a system like this so I can grasp my options for configuring it?
